Working Together for Non-profits and Community Programs

A workshop for non-profits and community programs on working together, and on working well with the volunteers, partners, and agencies they bring in or must work with.

In cooperation with
The University of Chicago Center for Human Rights

This workshop is being designed in cooperation with the Center.

Many groups, one mission

Non-profits and community programs rarely work alone. Staff, board members, and volunteers work alongside partner organizations, funders, government agencies, and the communities they serve. Each group arrives with its own goals, habits, and constraints.

This workshop helps your organization work together internally, and work well with everyone it brings in or must interact with.

Learn it by doing

Like every workshop from The Crowd Training, this one is built around games, simulations, and interactive discussion. Participants feel the concepts first, then talk about what happened and how it applies to their work.

What your organization works on

Shared purpose

Agreeing on what success looks like when every group has its own priorities.

Trust and respect across groups

Working with people from different backgrounds, roles, and organizations.

Psychological safety

People raise concerns, ask questions, and admit mistakes without fear of blame.

Clear communication and handoffs

Keeping staff, volunteers, and partners informed as work moves between them.

Learning from setbacks

Treating what goes wrong as information, and changing the process that allowed it.

Growth mindset

Believing the team can get better together, and acting on it.

Agenda

Full day shown. The half day keeps the opening, one game, the partner simulation, and the action plan. Conference sessions run one game with a debrief.

8:30
Opening: who is in the room

Participants map the groups they work with and where working together is hardest today.

9:00
Game: one mission, many players

A team game where each group holds part of the goal. Success depends on sharing it.

10:15
Discussion: what helps and what gets in the way

Small groups compare experiences and name the behaviors that make collaboration work.

11:00
Simulation: bringing in partners

Teams take on volunteers and outside partners mid-task and practice onboarding them quickly.

12:00
Lunch

1:00
Game: fail fast, learn faster

A game built to produce mistakes. Groups practice a blame-free review and try again.

2:15
Designing how you work together

Each group agrees on the norms and habits it will keep with staff, volunteers, and partners.

3:15
Action plan and close

Each group leaves with three changes to try and a way to check whether they worked.

What your organization leaves with

A shared picture of everyone you work with and how
Agreed norms for working with volunteers and partners
A blame-free method for learning from setbacks
An action plan owned by the group

Who it's for

Non-profit staff, boards, and volunteers, and community programs of any size. Partner organizations are welcome to join the session.
